The village of Galena, Ohio spans 1.7 miles and is located in Delaware County. The village sits at the joining of Little Walnut Creek and Big Walnut Creek just a little north of Columbus, Ohio. The community was first known as Zoar, but the name was changed to Galena in 1834 when their first post office was established. Galena is known for its historic New England style downtown area which features a number of structures dating from the 1820s. Today downtown Galena bustles in the evenings alive with pubs and restaurants and more.
The village was established in 1809, the landscape lent itself to millwork and so the two creeks were used as a mill seat. The village was platted in 1816 by William Carpenter. The village green has long be the focus of commercial activity and it is circled by historic business buildings like the Dustin Inn, a 1906 bank and the Masonic Lodge. The villages original plan contained lots for a school and church near the square and Methodist Church was built in 1829, the Galena School was built in 1868 and an Episcopal church was built in 1877 to fill those needs. The early economy of the village rested in the grist mill, saw mills and an agricultural implement factory. The village was incorporated in 1924 and municipal services in the community soon followed.
