The tract of land was used to pay soldiers from the Revolutionary war for their service to the nation. The land in the area was originally deeded to John Brown of Kentucky who later sold the land to Dr. Oliver Bigelow. Bigelow laid out the village in 1813 and a community was born. The early economy was based in agriculture and the railroad arrived in 1880 bringing a new age of prosperity to the area. The town hall and opera were constructed in 1885 followed by the arrival of telephone lines and service. In 1926 a virtually complete mastodon skeleton was found on a local farm which drew visitors from all around.
