The city of Powell, Ohio is located in Delaware County. The city spans 4.93 square miles and it serves as a bedroom community to the Columbus metropolitan statistical area. Both Money magazine and CNN ranked Powell at #18 on the 100 Best Places to Live in the United States list in 2005. Powell sits at the intersection of C.R.9 and State Route 750 and rests between the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers. Powell has been home to a number of notable people including NFL players Chinedum Ndukwe, William, White, Mike Vrabel and Robert Smith as well as actress Milena Kanakaredes and OSU basketball Coach Thad Matta.

The community of Powell was founded in 1801, two years later Ohio became a state. In the beginning Powell was known as Middlebury, named after Middlebury, Connecticut where many of the settlers came from. The community was recognized as a municipality in 1947 and in 1857 the first post office was established by Thomas Powell and subsequently the communities name was changed to Powell. The town remained small throughout the years up until the 1980s. Then, the community’s  potential as a suburb was recognized and residential development brought an influx of residence raising the population from around 400 to over 6,000. In 2000, Powell grew to large for its village status and became an official city.

According to the United States Census of 2010, Powell was home to 11,500 residents spread throughout 3,796 households giving the city a population density of 2,332.7 people per square mile. The city is primarily residential in nature and resists the addition of big retail business like Walmart, and other major businesses  such financial, technological and industrial businesses. The resistance is due to a desire to keep the historic nature of the town and to preserve property values. Powell has its own police department, but is served by the Liberty Township Fire Department. The city could have its own school system, but prefers to remain a part of the Olentangy Local School District. Powell has a historic downtown, or central business district that  features many small businesses, boutiques and antique stores.

The city of Powell enjoys a certain affluence that is reflected in its economy and its homes. According to the Census of 2000, the median house income was $115,904 and the median family income was  $117,801. The city has a wonderful parks&recreation system that features over 200 educational, recreational and leisure programs and activities as well as 85 acres of parkland. The park lands offer 12 miles of trails, wildlife viewing, playgrounds, sports fields and courts and so much more. Powell is also known for its peaceful upscale neighborhoods like The Lakes of Silverleaf, Chambers Glen, Canterbury Estates and many others.
