The city of Westerville, Ohio lies within both Franklin and Delaware counties, it is a northeastern suburb of Columbus and spans 12.61 miles. It was once known as “The Dry Capital of the World” due to laws strictly prohibiting the sale of alcohol. The city has won several awards including, but not limited to being named America’s best suburb by Movoto Real Estate in 2013, achieving a rank of #15 on the Top 100 Best Places to Live List from Money magazine in 2009, and named by Sports Illustrated as “Sportstown Ohio” in 2003. The city is home to many notable people including two-time Olympian Bob Kennedy, professional golfer Jason Day, inventor and early automobile pioneer John William Lambert.
The area was settled early in the 1800s, beginning in 1809, the town was platted in 1865 and officially incorporated in 1858. In 1859 a strict town ordinance was passed prohibiting the sale of alcohol in the community. In the years that followed pro and anti temperance followers clashed in the “Westerville Whiskey Wars” Even after the end of prohibition the community remained dry for the greater part of the 20th century. In 1995 Westerville annexed 941 non-dry acres which eliminated the cities dry nature. Today, as a suburb of Columbus many of Westerville’s residents work outside the community in the Greater Columbus area.[sws_pullquote_right]

According to the 2010 United States Census, Westerville was home to 36,120 spread 13,859 giving the city a population density of 2,896.6 inhabitants per square mile. According to city-data.com in 2012 the median household income in the city was $83,057, much higher than the state’s median figure of $46,829. The top five employers in the city are JPMorgan Chase, Mount Carmel Health, the Westerville City School District, Otterbein University and Continental Message Solution. The city has a council-manager style of government and public education is provided by the Westerville City School District.
Points of interest in the community include the many boutiques and businesses of the “Uptown Westerville” area, the Westerville Public Library which includes the Anti-Saloon League Museum, and the Inniswood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. The city has a large parks system that includes parks with playgrounds, shelter houses, sports fields, open play areas, dog and skate parks, historic sites and bike and leisure paths that encourage residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor activities.
