Whether you're visiting for the day, spending a weekend in town or considering making Granville home, there's plenty to explore in this small Central Ohio village.
Known for its New England-inspired architecture, historic homes, tree-lined streets and surrounding countryside, Granville is best experienced at a slower pace. Grab a coffee, take a walk and leave yourself some time to explore.
Here are 10 of our favorite ways to experience Granville.
1. Take a Walk Down Broadway
Start in the heart of the Village. Broadway is lined with historic architecture, locally owned shops, restaurants and some of Granville's most recognizable landmarks.
For a closer look at the area's history, the Granville Historical Society offers a self-guided Broadway Walking Tour highlighting significant homes and buildings throughout the historic district.
2. Explore Denison University
Founded in 1831, Denison University sits on a hill overlooking the Village and is an important part of Granville's identity. Walk the campus, enjoy the architecture and take in views of the surrounding area.
Check Denison's calendar before visiting for concerts, lectures, exhibits and other events that may be open to the public.
3. Visit Bryn Du Mansion
Just east of downtown, Bryn Du Mansion sits on a 52-acre estate and hosts art shows, community gatherings, sporting events, weddings and seasonal activities throughout the year.
Even when there isn't an event underway, the mansion grounds and expansive Great Lawn are worth exploring.
4. Walk or Bike the T.J. Evans Trail
The T.J. Evans Trail follows a former railroad corridor through the area, passing Raccoon Creek, wooded areas and farmland.
Popular with walkers, runners and cyclists, the trail can be accessed close to downtown and is an easy addition to a day in the Village.
5. Shop Local Downtown
Spend some time browsing Granville's independent shops, galleries and specialty stores along Broadway and the surrounding streets. You'll find books, artwork, gifts, clothing, home décor and more.
Downtown is compact enough to explore without much of an itinerary—park the car and wander.
6. Eat at a Local Restaurant
Granville offers plenty of choices for lunch, dinner or a casual drink, from cafés and pizza to international cuisine, pub fare and more elevated dining.
In warmer weather, find a patio and enjoy the activity downtown.
7. Get a Scoop of Whit's Frozen Custard
The original Whit's Frozen Custard opened right here in Granville, and stopping for custard while walking downtown has become a local tradition.
Grab your favorite flavor and enjoy it while exploring the Village.
8. Step Inside Granville's History
Located in the 1842 Avery-Downer House on East Broadway, the Robbins Hunter Museum features historic furnishings and decorative arts inside a beautifully preserved Greek Revival home.
The Granville Historical Society Museum is another worthwhile stop for learning more about the community's history.
9. Get Outside
Beyond downtown, Spring Valley Nature Preserve offers wooded trails close to the Village, while nearby Infirmary Mound Park provides hundreds of acres for hiking and outdoor recreation.
A short drive away, The Dawes Arboretum offers nearly 2,000 acres of gardens, forests, trails and natural areas to explore.
10. Experience a Granville Tradition
Granville hosts seasonal events, concerts, markets and community gatherings throughout the year. Summer brings outdoor activities and polo at Bryn Du, while the holiday season includes the annual Candlelight Walking Tour.
Check the local events calendar before your trip—you may find another reason to extend your visit.
